Despite significant progress in recent years, the health sector in Afghanistan is still facing major challenges. Some of these challenges include lack of medical equipment, specialized manpower, limited access to health services in remote areas and continuous insecurity. Also, poor infrastructure and inadequate funding for the health sector are other problems that affect the quality and access to health services.

Health care and medical education in Afghanistan

The quality of treatment and medical education in Afghanistan is facing many challenges. Afghanistan’s healthcare system has improved over the past two decades, but there are still many problems:

  1. Lack of resources and equipment: Many hospitals and medical centers are facing a shortage of medical equipment, drugs and financial resources.

  2. Manpower: The lack of specialist doctors, nurses and other health workers is one of the biggest challenges. Also, brain drain due to insecurity and inappropriate working conditions is another reason.

  3. access to services: In rural and remote areas, access to health services is very limited. Insecurity and wars have also caused many medical centers to be destroyed or disabled.

  4. Medical Education: Universities and educational institutions are facing a shortage of experienced professors, educational resources and laboratory equipment. The quality of education is also low due to economic and social problems.

  5. Infrastructure: Health infrastructure needs to be renovated and strengthened. Many medical centers are old and in need of major repairs.

  6. Public Health: Infectious diseases such as measles, polio and vaccine preventable diseases are still considered a serious threat. Children’s vaccination and maternal health care have also improved but need further strengthening.

Despite these challenges, efforts are being made to improve the health status of the country. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations cooperate in this direction to provide better health services to the people.
